It is the first Nikon SLR with a display divided into coloured sectors.

The Nikon F70 has an autofocus with two modes, single and continuous autofocus. Manual focus by hand is of course also possible.

When it comes to exposure, the photographer can choose between program, aperture and shutter priority, manual mode or one of eight scene modes. Exposure times range from 14000 s to 30 seconds and a Bulb mode, the machine has a built-in film advance motor.

Films with ISO 6 to ISO 6400 can be used, but DX-coded films are only recognized in the range of ISO 25 to ISO 5000.

A flash can be attached to the F70 via a hot shoe, but the SLR also has a built-in flash.
