It is the electronic version of its mechanical sister Nikon FM.

From an aesthetic point of view, it differs from the FM not only for the presence of the “A” position (Aperture: aperture opening) on ​​the shutter speed ring, but also for a slightly wider and less angular pentaprism and the possibility of changing the standard “K” focusing screen with two others (“B” and “E”). Mechanically, however, it offers all the contents of the previous Nikon EL2 to which it adds the possibility of using the MD-11 and MD-12 motor-winder, and of replacing the back with an MF-12 date back.

The available times, up to 1/1000 s, can be selected manually or with aperture priority by selecting the A option on the dial. In manual mode, the correct exposure is achieved by superimposing the galvanometer needle visible in the viewfinder with the reference needle of the set time.
