It is the electronic version of its mechanical sister Nikon FM.

From an aesthetic point of view, it differs from the FM as well as by the presence of the "A" position on the shutter speed dial (Aperture: aperture opening), by a slightly wider and less angular pentaprism and by the possibility of changing the setting screen. standard fire “K” with two others (“B” and “E”). Mechanically, however, it offers all the contents of the previous Nikon EL2 to which it adds the possibility of using the MD-11 and MD-12 motor-winder, and replacing the back with an MF-12 date back.

The available times, up to 1/1000 s, can be selected manually or with aperture priority by selecting the A option on the ring. In manual mode, the correct exposure occurs by superimposing the galvanometer needle visible in the viewfinder with the reference of the set time.
