It has a built-in 1.5 frames per second motor and a low-profile prism viewfinder with built-in dioptric correction. The camera resembles the Mamiya M645 in some ways but offers more exposure options than any manual focus 6x45 camera.

A small LCD screen on the top plate that indicates mode, exposure compensation, and exposure count. Unlike comparable medium format cameras, the 645 does not have an interchangeable back system.

The camera requires six AA batteries, loaded in the grip on the right side, to power all the camera's functions. There is also a lithium battery built into the base of the camera, which serves to maintain the electronic memories.

If the battery runs out, the film can be advanced manually by removing a knob on the base of the camera with a coin, screwing it into the body on the left side and turning the knob clockwise. The grip is removable, but mostly for the convenience of charging the batteries; the grip is essential for using the camera, it carries the batteries, the main on-off switch and the shutter button
